How to Spot a Bad Tailor in Bangkok (Red Flags to Avoid)
Warning signs of a low-quality or scam Bangkok tailor include high-pressure same-day booking tactics from street touts, headline prices that seem too low for “full bespoke” work, no visible fabric bolts to inspect in person, vague answers about how many measurements are taken, and demands for full payment before any fitting. A genuine bespoke tailor will happily explain their measurement process, show you fabric in person, and include fittings and alterations in the quoted price.
The most common red flags
Street touts and commission-based referrals. Some tuk-tuk drivers, hotel staff, or street promoters in tourist areas receive a commission for bringing customers to specific shops, and the shop's prices are often inflated to cover that commission. A tailor you found through an unsolicited street approach is not automatically bad, but it's worth verifying reviews independently before committing.
Prices that seem too good for “full bespoke.” A genuinely bespoke suit — fresh pattern, ~30 individual measurements, quality mill fabric — has a realistic cost floor. A very low headline price for “full bespoke” work often means made-to-measure construction, lower-grade fabric, or hidden extra charges revealed later.
Vague answers about the measurement process. Ask directly: “How many measurements do you take, and do you measure both sides of my body?” A shop doing genuine bespoke work will describe something close to 30 individual points. A vague or defensive answer is worth noting.
No fabric bolts to inspect. A shop with 1,000+ fabrics should be able to show you actual bolts, not just a thin swatch card or catalogue photos. Being asked to choose fabric from a picture alone, with no physical sample, is a reason to ask more questions.
Full payment demanded before any fitting. A reasonable deposit before production starts is standard practice. Being pushed to pay the full amount immediately, before any measurement or fitting has occurred, removes your leverage if the finished garment doesn't fit.
Extreme time pressure to decide today. Legitimate express services exist, but there's a difference between an efficient express process and pressure tactics designed to prevent you from comparing options or reading reviews first.
Reviews that look inconsistent or recently manufactured. Check the shop's Google reviews for review recency and detail level — a shop with mostly generic five-word reviews posted in a short burst is worth more scrutiny than one with detailed, specific reviews spread naturally over years.
What a trustworthy tailor looks like instead
The inverse of every red flag above is a positive signal you can verify in one visit.
- Explains their measurement process without hesitation, ideally in the ~30-point range for bespoke work.
- Shows you physical fabric bolts, not just photos.
- Quotes a price that includes fittings and alterations, and explains clearly what would cost extra.
- Doesn't require full payment before any fitting has taken place.
- Has a visible, verifiable track record — years in business, physical address, consistent reviews over time, and ideally independent press mentions rather than only self-published claims.
