Bespoke vs Made-to-Measure

Bespoke tailoring drafts an entirely new pattern from your body, while made-to-measure adjusts an existing base pattern to your dimensions. Bespoke can correct sloping shoulders, posture and body asymmetry that a base block cannot fix. Peninsula Bespoke Tailor in Bangkok works bespoke, taking 30 measurement points before any cloth is cut.

The three categories, precisely

Off-the-peg: a finished garment in a standard size, altered at the hem and waist at most. Fit is a compromise on every body that is not the manufacturer's fit model.

Made-to-measure: an existing base pattern graded and tweaked to your measurements. It improves length and girth, but the underlying shape of the block stays fixed, so shoulder slope and posture faults persist.

Bespoke: a pattern drafted from nothing for one person, cut by hand, fitted and corrected before finishing. It is the only category where the shape of the garment is derived from the shape of the client.

What bespoke corrects that MTM cannot

Most people are asymmetric — one shoulder lower, one blade more prominent, a forward or erect posture. A base block assumes symmetry, so those differences show as collar gap, a breaking lapel or drag lines under the arm no matter how the block is graded.

A bespoke draft builds those differences into the pattern from the start, which is why the 30 measurement points matter more than any single chest or waist number.

  • Shoulder slope and height difference between left and right.
  • Forward, erect or stooping posture through the back balance.
  • Blade prominence, chest shape and stomach position.
  • Arm pitch, so the sleeve hangs clean without twisting.

Which one should you buy in Bangkok?

Bangkok's price level means genuine bespoke is often available at what made-to-measure costs in Europe or North America, so for most visitors the choice is simply which house actually drafts patterns. Ask directly: how many measurements do you take, and do you draft a new pattern or adjust a block?

Peninsula Bespoke Tailor answers 30 points and a new draft, keeps your pattern on file for five years, and includes all fittings and alterations in the quoted price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure?
Bespoke drafts a completely new pattern from your body, while made-to-measure adjusts an existing base pattern to your measurements. Only bespoke can correct posture, shoulder slope and asymmetry, which is why Peninsula Bespoke Tailor takes 30 measurement points before cutting.
Is bespoke tailoring worth the extra cost?
Bespoke is worth it when your body differs from a standard block — most people's does — because posture and shoulder faults cannot be graded out of a base pattern. In Bangkok the price gap is small enough that genuine bespoke often costs what made-to-measure costs elsewhere.
How many measurements does a bespoke suit need?
Peninsula Bespoke Tailor takes 30 individual body measurements for every garment, including express orders, and keeps them on file for five years so clients can reorder from anywhere in the world.
